Russia’s lower house voted unanimously today to ban what authorities call “harmful” propaganda for a childless lifestyle in the hope of boosting the declining birth rate. According to official figures released in September, the birth rate is at its lowest level in twenty-five years, while the death rate is rising, as Moscow’s war in Ukraine rages on. The Kremlin called the evidence “devastating for the future of the nation.” President Vladimir Putin, who has presented Russia as a bastion of “traditional values” in an existential battle with the decadent West, has encouraged women to have at least three children, saying it will help secure the future of Russians.
