Russia: Blocked sites due to the way they covered the war in Ukraine

The news site Mediazona, one of the last independent voices in Russia, announced today that the authorities had blocked him because of the way he covered the invasion of Ukraine.

Russian regulator Roskomnadzor “has begun blocking Mediazona,” the statement said.

Agence France-Presse reports that the site has been included in the official list of “blocked” media in Russia.

The move was taken “because we honestly cover what is happening in Ukraine and call it invasion, invasion and war, war,” Mediazona added, stressing that Moscow wants to impose “military censorship” and that “there are almost no more independent means information in the country “.

The non-governmental organization Roskomsvoboda also reported that the authorities blocked other websites, such as Republic, Snob.ru and Agentstvo, as well as local newspapers.

“Thank you for staying with us, the night will be over,” Republic said, explaining that readers can read its content if they have a VPN.

Dozens of independent media workers, such as Dojd and Mediazona, have been branded “foreign agents” and many journalists and publishers have left the country. Many analysts believe that in the near future there will be no independent media in Russia, not even the authoritative newspaper Novaïa Gazeta, whose director was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2021.

Mediazona was founded in 2014 by members of the women’s band Pussy Riot Nadezhda Tolokonikova and Maria Aliochina and mainly covered the cases of political activists, opposition demonstrations and cases of violation of the rights of prisoners.
