A Russia said this Monday (20) that he needs an urgent response from the U.S regarding its comprehensive security demands and has again warned of a possible military backlash unless it sees political action to allay its concerns.
Moscow, which strains the West with a concentration of soldiers near the border with the Ukraine, revealed last week a list of security proposals it wants to negotiate, including a pledge that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (Otan) will refrain from any military activity in Eastern Europe and Ukraine.
The United States says that some of the Russian proposals are obviously unacceptable, but that it will respond sometime this week with more concrete proposals on the format of any talks.
Konstantin Gavrilov, a Russian diplomat in Vienna, said relations between his country and NATO had arrived at a “moment of truth”.
“The conversation needs to be serious and everyone at NATO understands perfectly well, despite their strength and power, that concrete political action needs to be taken, otherwise the alternative is a military-technical and military reaction from Russia,” he said, according to a quote from the RIA news agency.
The American reaction will likely shape the Russian calculation of Ukraine, the main sticking point in relations between Russia and the West. The United States and Ukraine say Russia may be preparing an invasion of the former Soviet republic, which the Russian government denies.
