Russia calls Hamas leader’s death an ‘unacceptable political assassination’

O assassination of Hamas’ top political leaderIsmail Haniyeh, is “an absolutely unacceptable political assassination,” a Russian deputy foreign minister told the state news agency RIA on Wednesday (31).

“This is an absolutely unacceptable political assassination and will lead to further escalation of tensions,” Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov was quoted as saying by RIA.

“Attacking Ismail Haniyeh is a heinous terrorist crime and a flagrant violation of laws and ideal values,” he added.

Bogdanov said the killing will also have a negative impact on ceasefire negotiations in Gaza, RIA added.

Russia, which has ties with Arab countries, Iran and Hamas, as well as Israel, has frequently condemned violence in the region and accused the United States of ignoring the need for an independent Palestinian state.

Turkey’s Foreign Ministry also condemned the attack, saying Netanyahu had “no intention of achieving peace.”

“We offer our condolences to the Palestinian people who handed over hundreds of thousands of martyrs like Haniyeh so that they could live in peace in their own homeland, under the roof of their own state,” the Turkish ministry said.

“This attack also aims to spread the war in Gaza to a regional level. If the international community does not take action to deter Israel, our region will face much larger conflicts.”

Hamas vows retaliation

The assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh “will not be in vain,” Palestinian President Musa Abu Marzouk, a member of the group’s political bureau, said, according to state news agency WAFA.

Palestinian and Islamist national factions called for a general strike and mass demonstrations following Haniyeh’s assassination.

Sami Abu Zuhri, a senior Hamas official, said the group was “ready to pay various prices.”

“We are engaged in an open war to liberate Jerusalem and we are ready to pay various prices.”
