Russia can provide nuclear plant to musk plan, says Putin’s sent

Russia could provide a small nuclear power plant for a mission to Mars planned by Spacex billionaire and CEO ELON Musk, said President Vladimir Putin’s international cooperation envoy on Thursday (27).

Kirill Dmitiev stated that the government could discuss the offer with Musk for video conferencing. It was the second time Dmitiev spoke about potential cooperation with Musk this month.

The proposal comes after US President Donald Trump began negotiations with Russia to revive bilateral ties between countries.

Moscow is seeking to develop economic cooperation with Washington, even though US sanctions against Russia over the conflict remain in force.

Autosustainable City in Mars

Musk, who is close to Trump, said earlier this month that Spacex’s rocket Starship would take off to Mars until the end of 2026, despite several test failures and skepticism of some space experts on the schedule designed by the entrepreneur.

In an X publication, the CEO pointed out that human landings could occur as early as 2029, but that “2031 was more likely.” He spoke last year about plans to build an “autosustainable city in about 20 years” on Mars, something that would need a source of energy.

Dmitiev, who is also head of a fund that works to attract foreign investors, said Russia could contribute greatly to a potential mission to Mars.

“Russia can offer a small nuclear power plant for a mission to Mars and other advanced technological capabilities,” said Putin’s envoy, according to state news agency.

“We believe Russia has a lot to offer for a mission to Mars, because we have some nuclear technologies that I think can be applicable,” he added.

Dmitiev also commented that Elon Musk is a “great visionary” and that Russia sees cooperation with him as important.

Russia projects for space exploration

Yuri Borisov, then head of the Russian Space Agency, Roscosmos, said last year that his country and China were considering placing a nuclear plant on the moon between 2033 and 2035.

He argued that the action could allow lunar settlements to be built one day.

Russia reported in 2022 that it would begin to work on its own mission to Mars after the European space agency (ESA) suspended a joint project after the beginning of the war.
