Russia can win war at any moment with ‘unbridled’ might, says professor

Since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, more than 3.5 million people have left the country and more than 900 civilians have been killed in bombings and attacks. Last weekend, the United States proved the use of hypersonic missiles during Russian attacks on Ukraine – the first time this type of attack has been practiced by Russia.

In the opinion of Marcelo Suano, professor of International Law Relations at Ibmec-SP, the war is costly for Russians, but they could win it “at any moment.”

“The disproportion of troops is very great, the Ukrainian resistance has been monumental and the war is costly for Russia, but they can win at any moment if they use the disproportionate mass unchecked,” he explained.

The professor, however, pondered that the use of the full Russian potential would cause “civilian slaughter”. “This is something that is not in the Russian strategic scenario, for what it would represent for the world and population, he needs to win without having side effects.”

According to Suano, negotiations between Russia and Ukraine are “in the right process”.

“It’s an escalation, you never put the main authorities in a first meeting, you don’t take the decision maker of last resort”, he evaluates.

The attempt by the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, to meet the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, is strategic, in the expert’s opinion.

“Zelensky seeks to place the leader of a besieged country, which has been invaded, which has nuclei of resistance, but is facing a much stronger country, to propagandistically use the fact of confronting the leader of the invading power, it is a positive point for the leadership from him”.
