Russia claims full control of area in eastern Ukraine

The Russian Army said on Monday (20) that it had taken full control of the settlement of Bilohorivka, in the Luhansk region, in eastern Ukraine. Kiev, however, said there was still fighting in the region.

The Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement that its forces had taken up better positions in the region.

Ukraine's government said fighting was ongoing around Bilohorivka and added that Ukrainian forces had intercepted three attacks in the nearby Siversk sector.

Earlier, the Ukrainians had said that troops from Kiev “were holding back” Russian attacks near the village.

The Russian Defense Ministry added that it was also involved in clashes in Ukraine's Kharkiv region, near Vovchansk, Starytsia and Hlyboke, where it said troops intercepted two counterattacks.

Russian forces entered the Kharkiv region this month in what President Vladimir Putin said was an operation to create a buffer zone to protect Russia's border regions.

President Volodymyr Zelensky told Reuters in an interview on Monday (20) that the situation north of Kharkiv was now “under control”.
