The Russian Defense Ministry said on Wednesday (2) that the country’s armed forces had taken over the city of Kherson, in southern Ukraine. “Russian Armed Forces divisions have taken full control of the Kherson regional center,” said ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov.
In videos posted on social media, Russian military vehicles were seen near the city on Tuesday (1st), after days of bombing and intense fighting. The publications provide new evidence that the Russians are on Kherson unhindered.
On Tuesday afternoon, Kherson Mayor Igor Kolykhaiev posted a message asking for help on social media, warning that the city was under attack. “Residential buildings and urban facilities are burning,” he wrote.
“We are NOT military! But I will keep the city and its functioning as long as I can,” Kolykhaiev wrote. “If the Russian soldiers and their leadership will listen to me. I beg you: get out of our city, stop bombing civilians. You already took everything you wanted. Including human lives.”
At least 21 people were killed and 112 injured in a bombing on Wednesday, according to the governor of the Kharkiv region in eastern Ukraine. Ukrainian authorities said Russian missiles hit residential areas and administration buildings in the center of the city.
