Russia concerned over Islamic State plans to destabilize Central Asia

The Russian government is concerned about the Islamic State (IS) jihadist plans to destabilize the region of Central Asia as well as the country itself, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov was quoted as saying by Russian state news agencies.

The Russian foreign minister also said that the first Afghan envoy of the Taliban regime had been accredited and started working in Moscow last month. The armed fundamentalist Sunni movement came to power in Afghanistan on 15 August.

Mr Lavrov also stressed at a summit on Afghanistan in China that his government would consider unacceptable the US military presence or deployment of military infrastructure in countries bordering Southeast Asia.
