Russia condemns Australian to 13 years in prison for fighting alongside Ukraine

Russia has condemned an Australian citizen to 13 years in maximum security arrest for fighting alongside the Ukrainian forces, prosecutors said in an eastern region of Ukraine controlled by Russia on Friday (16).

Oscar Jenkins, 33, was considered guilty by a court for participating in an armed conflict as a mercenary, according to a statement by prosecutors.

The court had ruled that he had participated in Russian troop combat operations between March and December 2024.

Australian media reported last year that Jenkins, a Melbourne teacher, was serving alongside the Ukrainian Armed Forces when he was captured by the Russian forces.

In January, Australia summoned the Russian ambassador due to what turned out to be false news that Jenkins had been killed after being captured by Russia.
