Russia confirms Russian Black Sea Fleet deputy commander killed

Russian officials have confirmed that the deputy commander of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, First Class Captain Andrei Pali, was killed on the battlefield in Mariupol.

Earlier, the Ukrainian side had reported that the senior Russian officer was killed as heavy fighting continued in Mariupol.

Pali’s death was initially confirmed by Nakhimov Naval College Secretary Konstantin Tsarenko on the social network Vkontakte (VK), according to the BBC.

Later, a Russian senator from Sevastopol – the base of the Black Sea Fleet in the Russian-annexed Crimea – wrote in a post to VK that “Sevastopol suffered a heavy, irreparable loss … Pali died in the battle for liberation of Mariupol by the Nazis ”.

Sevastopol Governor Mikhail Razvozayev told the Telegram that “Andrei Nikolaevich chose to defend his homeland as a work of his life and died for our peaceful future,” according to the BBC.

It is noted that Ukrainian sources claim that six more Russian generals have been killed in the war since the start of the Russian invasion on February 24. Russia, however, has confirmed the death of only one of them, General Andrei Sukhovetsky.
