Russia continues attempts to encircle Ukrainian forces in east: adviser

Russia remains focused on attempts to encircle Ukrainian forces in the east of the country, a Ukrainian presidential adviser said on Tuesday.

Oleksiy Arestovych, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, said Russia’s main efforts in the east were around the cities of Popasna, Severodonetsk and Rubizhne, with more fighting around Sloviansk and Kramatorsk.

“Although the enemy has resorted to powerful artillery and air strikes, our troops successfully maneuver and repel attacks,” Arestovych said.

Regional officials also announced what they said was the first successful evacuation of the village of Bilohorivka, which has seen frequent shelling over the past week.

Oleksiy Smyrnov of the Donetsk regional administration said 49 people, including eight children, had been evacuated from the village under Russian fire and taken by train to a safe location in western Ukraine.

Meanwhile, in nearby Kreminna, which was captured by Russian forces last week, Luhansk regional governor Serhiy Hayday hinted that there were significant Russian casualties when two buildings in the city blew up on Monday.

The explosions — at the city council buildings and another building used by Russian forces — were caused by gas explosions, Hayday said.

“There are big losses. The so-called mayor of the people died in the city hall building. We are still figuring out what happened, there were a lot of people [dentro dos prédios]”, he said.
