Russia could send gas through other pipelines, but chooses not to, says EU

Russia could send more gas to Europe via other routes to compensate for the closure of the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, but Moscow chooses not to do so, a European Commission spokesman said on Monday.

“If there was a technical problem that prevented the supply via Nord Stream 1, there would be the possibility, if there was a will, to deliver gas to Europe through other pipelines. This is something we are not seeing happening,” the spokesperson said.

The spokesman added that this behavior is proof that Russia “arms” its gas supplies to Europe. Russian gas giant Gazprom has blamed the closure of Nord Stream 1 on Western sanctions and technical issues.

Gas price rise

The rise in gas prices in Europe on Monday is part of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s strategy and the intended consequence of Russia stopping the flow of gas through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, a German government spokesman said.

Speaking to the press, the spokesman said that there are difficult months ahead, but that the government is working to mitigate the effect of rising energy prices.
