Russia today set a new record for coronavirus cases in 24 hours, a sign that the epidemic is not receding except during the holiday week declared by President Vladimir Putin.
According to government figures, 41,335 new coronavirus cases have been reported in the last 24 hours, a record number since the pandemic began.
The country also recorded 1,888 deaths during the same period, a number slightly lower than yesterday, Friday.
Russia, the country hardest hit by the coronavirus in Europe, has more than 8.7 million cases since the beginning of the pandemic and 245,635 deaths, according to official figures. But according to the statistics service Rosstat, which adopts a broader definition of virus-related deaths, the total death toll at the end of September was almost 450,000.
The current record of infections is set during a national holiday, which was declared by Vladimir Putin from October 30 to November 7 to reduce infections.
In Moscow, which is the largest outbreak in the country, schools, hairdressers, shops, gyms and other “non-essential services” remain closed during this period.
The rapid spread of Covid-19 in Russia is facilitated mainly by the low rate of vaccination of the population, as only 33.8% of Russians have been fully immunized to date.
