Russia: Defense Ministry imposes further secrecy over soldier deaths in Ukraine

The Russian Defense Ministry said that the relatives of the soldiers killed in Ukraine should turn to the military and not to the social authorities for compensation, imposing an additional level of secrecy around the war casualties, as reported by Reuters.

Russia has described military deaths as state secrets even in peacetime and has not updated the official figures for its losses in Ukraine for nearly four weeks.

In its announcement, the Ministry of Defense requested that the benefits paid to the families of the dead soldiers be no longer supervised by political officials, but handled by the conscription offices. The move is aimed at “limiting the circle of people” who will receive information about Russian soldiers being killed in Ukraine.

The proposal appeared on a government website. It was not clear when it would be reviewed by the government.

The Russian Defense Ministry said on March 25 that 1,351 Russian soldiers had been killed and 3,825 wounded since Moscow began its invasion of Ukraine on February 24.

The ministry has not provided any updates on military casualties since then, but the Kremlin has spoken of “significant casualties.”
