Russia demanded that Ukraine leave regions in the east of the country, says source

Russia demanded, during negotiations in Istanbul, Turkey, that Ukraine gave the land still under Kiev’s control, CNN A source familiar with the face-to-face meeting between the two countries on Friday (16).

Asked if Russia demanded that Ukraine would completely withdraw from four regions disputed in the east, the source replied, “Yes.”

Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizehzia and Kherson are the four regions in question that Russia tried to illegally attach in 2022. Russia claims these regions, but has no full control over them.

First meeting between Russia and Ukraine in three years

Delegations from Russia and Ukraine gathered on Friday (16) in the city of Istanbul, Turkey, for first direct peace negotiations in more than three years.

The meeting took place under pressure from US President Donald Trump to end Europe’s deadliest conflict since World War II.

Turkey Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said during the beginning of the meeting that it is essential to reach a ceasefire among countries as soon as possible.

However, the expectations of an advance, which were already low, were even more shaken on Thursday (15), when Trump said there would be no advance without a meeting between him and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

At the end of the negotiations, Russia and Ukraine agreed to make an exchange of 1,000 prisoners of war on each side, Ukraine Minister of Defense, Rustem Umarov, told TV. If the exchange really happens, it will be the largest in more than three years since the Ukraine invasion of Russia in February 2022.
