The Kremlin said on Friday (12) that reports that Russia planned to assassinate the chief executive of German arms manufacturer Rheinmetall were based on “false” information from anonymous sources.
A CNN exclusively reported on Thursday (11) that US intelligence discovered that Russia had plans to assassinate the executive of Rheinmetall, which produced artillery shells and military vehicles for Ukraine.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the reports came from anonymous sources, did not contain “serious documentation” and therefore could not be taken seriously.
Plan to kill executive
According to CNN discovered, the plot was part of a series of Russian plans to assassinate defense industry executives across Europe who supported Ukraine’s war effort, sources said.
The plan to kill Rheinmetall executive Armin Papperger was the most mature.
When the Americans learned of this, they informed Germany, whose security services managed to protect Papperger and foil the plot.
A senior German government official confirmed that Berlin was tipped off about the plot by the US.
