The Russian Foreign Ministry has announced that it will deport 34 French diplomats in retaliation.
In April, France deported 35 Russians with diplomatic status as part of a wider wave of deportations that saw more than 300 Russians deported from various European capitals.
Later that month, the French Foreign Ministry declared six Russian agents pretending to be diplomats “personae non gratae” after concluding an investigation by French intelligence that they were acting in the French national interest. .
Russia will also deport 24 Italian diplomats, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told the Italian news agency Agi.
The decision will be officially announced in about an hour, to the Italian ambassador in Moscow. It’s essentially a reaction to the Draghi government’s April 6 decision to expel 30 Russian diplomats from Italy.
