Russia deports Estonian consul arrested on secret documents

The deportation of the Estonian consul to St. Petersburg, where was arrested on the spot with secret documents decided the Russian Foreign Ministry. The consul was arrested yesterday (6/7) by men of the Federal Security Service (FSB) announcing that he was caught while receiving classified documents from a Russian citizen.

Estonian Consul Mark Latte must leave Russia within 48 hours, The Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that it had “strongly protested” that the Russian embassy in Estonia had collected secret information. He even described Tallinn’s stance on the issue as cynical, arguing that there was incontrovertible evidence of the Estonian consul’s illegal activity in St. Petersburg.

The Estonian Foreign Ministry announced yesterday that the arrest of the Estonian diplomat in Russia was “set up” and “provocative”, while the accusations against him were “baseless”.

“The allegation that classified documents belonged to him is completely unfounded. This is a challenge. The whole incident was set up “, Estonian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Aari Lemik told Reuters.

The arrest of the Estonian diplomat is another example of Russia choosing to confront rather than reverse the negative trend in relations with the countries of the European Union, said the representative of the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
