Russia does not recognize risk of accident at Ukraine nuclear plant, says US

You United States said this Sunday (28) that the Russia does not want to acknowledge the serious radiological hazard at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant in Ukraine, adding that this was the reason the country blocked the final draft of a nuclear non-proliferation treaty.

“Only the Russian Federation has decided to block consensus on an outcome document at the conclusion of the Tenth Review Conference of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

“Russia did this to block language that merely acknowledged the serious radiological hazard at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine,” the US State Department said in a statement.

The statement comes after Russia blocked an agreement on Friday on the final draft of a treaty revision of the UN considered the cornerstone of nuclear disarmament for criticism of Moscow’s actions in Ukraine .

On the same day, the nuclear power plant it wasdisconnected from the mains Ukraine for the first time in its history.

Ukraine’s nuclear operator Energoatom said fires at a nearby thermal power plant caused the last remaining power line in Zaporizhzhia to disconnect twice. The other three lines were “previously lost during the conflict”, the nuclear watchdog said.

Energoatom blamed Russia for the disconnect. “The attacks of the invaders caused a complete disconnection of the ZNPP (Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant) from the electricity grid – the first in history,” reads a statement from the operator.

The Russian regional governor installed at the site blamed Ukrainian military action for the disruptions and added that “work was underway to restore supply to the region and launch the second power unit”.

Zaporizhzhia generates around 20% of Ukraine’s electricity, and a prolonged national grid outage would be a major challenge for Ukraine as colder weather looms.

The nuclear power plant, which is the largest in the Europe , has been under Russian control since March. Clashes around the complex have sparked widespread concern and fears of disaster.

Ukraine has accused Russian troops of using the plant as a shield, risking potential disaster at the plant. The Kremlin, for its part, has repeatedly accused Ukrainian forces of bombing the site.
