His speed Twitter dropped by the Russian Internet regulator Roskomnadzor and the media. The social networking platform is accused of repeatedly failing to remove banned content from its website.
Roskomnadzor has threatened to block the service altogether, saying there are now more than 3,000 illegal posts.
Twitter, like other US social media, is widely used in Russia by allies of Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny, whose imprisonment last month sparked nationwide protests.
“The slowdown will affect 100% of mobile devices and 50% of non-mobile devices,” the regulator said in a statement posted on its website, according to APE-MPE, citing Reuters and AFP.
“If Twitter continues to ignore the requirements of the law, enforcement measures will continue as provided by the regulation and may reach the point of exclusion,” Roskomnadzor continued.
Twitter has not commented.
The move by the Russian authorities comes amid growing efforts by Moscow to exert greater influence on US social media platforms and frustration with what authorities see as the failure of such media to comply with Russian law.
