Russia: Duma to consider bill allowing more than 40 to enlist in army

In a sign of Russia’s urgency to step up its war effort in Ukraine, the Russian Duma announced today that it would consider a bill that would allow Russians over the age of 40 and foreigners over the age of 30 to enlist in the military.

The website of the State Duma, the lower house of the Russian parliament, states that the move will allow the military to take advantage of the skills of older professionals.

“The use of high-precision weapons, the handling of weapons and military equipment requires highly professional specialists. Experience shows that they reach this level at the age of 40-45,” the Duma website said.

So far only Russians aged 18 to 40 and foreigners aged 18 to 30 can enlist in the army.

Russia has faced enormous difficulties and heavy losses of men and equipment in the 86-day war in Ukraine, and Western military analysts say it urgently needs to mobilize more troops.

The Duma also notes on its website that the planned initiative will also make it easier to recruit civilian doctors, engineers and special operations and communications specialists.
