LAST UPDATE: 08:49
At least three people were killed, four others were injured and dozens of homes were damaged in the Russian city of Belgorod, not far from the border with Ukraine, said regional governor Vyacheslav Gladkov, who earlier spoke of several explosions in the city.
According to Mr. Gladkov, at least 11 apartment buildings and 39 residences were damaged, including five that were completely destroyed.
Of the four injured, two had to be hospitalized, including a ten-year-old boy, according to Mr. Gladkov.
“An investigation is being conducted into the reasons for the incident,” the regional governor said earlier.
“The air defense system may have been activated,” the official added via the Telegram platform.
The Reuters news agency points out that it was unable to independently confirm the information released by the governor.
There has so far been no reaction from the authorities in Kyiv.
Belgorod, a city of about 400,000 inhabitants, some 40 kilometers north of the border with Ukraine, is the capital of the region of the same name.
Since Russia’s military invaded Ukrainian territory on February 24, there have been repeated reports of attacks in Belgorod and other Russian communities near the border.
Moscow accuses Kiev forces of launching raids. The government of Ukraine officially does not take responsibility, however officials have spoken sarcastically of “karma”, of retribution.
