Moscow today expressed “deep concern” over the exchange of fire between the Israeli army and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad in the Gaza Strip, calling on both sides to show restraint.
“We observe with deep concern the development of events, which may lead to a resumption of a large-scale military conflict and further worsen the already deplorable humanitarian situation in Gaza,” Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in a statement.
“We call on all parties involved to exercise maximum restraint, prevent the escalation of armed operations and immediately restore a lasting ceasefire,” he added.
According to Zakharova, “a further escalation was caused by the fire of the Israeli air force on the Gaza Strip on August 5, to which Palestinian organizations responded by carrying out massive and indiscriminate bombings on Israeli territory.”
