In a press conference on Tuesday afternoon, the White House Security Adviser, Jake Sullivan, said that Russia had failed in the three objectives it had in starting the war in Ukraine.
“Russia has three goals with this attack on Ukraine: to subjugate Ukraine, increase Russia’s prestige and divide the West. Russia has failed in all three objectives. In fact, she has achieved the opposite so far,” Sullivan said.
Then, the adviser pointed out that the power and prestige of the Eastern European country are “ruining”, with its military not reaching the planned goals, the economy in decline and becoming a match on the international stage.
“Russia can take a city, a territory, but it will never achieve the objective that was to subjugate the country, to make Ukraine kneel before Russia, because the people will never be subjugated in that way”, he added.
Biden’s Voyage, Sanctions and Joint Allied Action
Jake Sullivan also commented on US President Joe Biden’s trip to Europe this week, noting that he will attend an emergency NATO summit in Brussels and then a European Council session.
He did not elaborate, but said Biden would discuss new sanctions with allies, as well as tightening existing ones, and ways to reduce European countries’ energy dependence on Russia.
In addition, one of the focus of the ads will be against countries that help Russia to weaken the effect of sanctions.
The White House adviser said that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) continues to strengthen the eastern flank and that the US is helping Ukraine by sending weapons and other supplies. Thus, the American president will be able to talk with partner countries about “the new phase of assistance to Ukraine”.
Finally, he stated that the American president will also discuss the issue of refugees.
The United States has been pressuring China to take an assertive position on the Ukraine conflict. On Friday, Biden tried to dissuade Chinese President Xi Jinping from helping the Russians, warning of the “implications and consequences” for Beijing if it provides material support to Moscow.
At Tuesday’s press conference, Sullivan said there are no indications that weapons were sent, however.
Russia has requested military support and economic assistance from China, two US officials told CNN last week. China has shown some openness to offering aid, according to a US diplomatic cable to allies. Both Moscow and Beijing denied that there were any such requests.
Another point of attention in the conflict is a possible nuclear war. The UN Secretary General, António Guterres, even said that this is within the realm of possibilities.
The White House Security Adviser said the United States will discuss a potential use of these artifacts.
