The Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) of Russia has imposed a fine on Apple in the amount of RUB 906 million for abusing its dominant position in the mobile applications market. This is a case that was initiated in 2019 after a complaint by Kaspersky Lab about the refusal to publish the parental control application Kaspersky Safe Kids in the App Store.
As reported on the FAS website, “Apple has abused its dominant position in the distribution market for mobile applications on the iOS operating system through a series of consecutive actions that have led to the provision of a competitive advantage to its own products and a simultaneous deterioration in the conditions for distribution of competitors’ products.”
The case against Apple was closed in August 2020. Then the antitrust service issued an order to the American company, according to which it is obliged to remove from its documentation provisions that allow it to reject the publication of third-party applications in the App Store for any reason. In addition, it also states that Apple applications should not have any advantage over third-party software. The order had to be complied with by November 30, 2020, but it was suspended because Apple appealed it in court.
With regard to the fine, Apple said that it did not agree with the FAS decision and intends to appeal it too.
