A Moscow court has fined video streaming service Twitch, social network Pinterest, vacation rental company Airbnb and logistics company United Parcel Service (UPS) for refusing to store personal data of Russian citizens in the country. , said the court this Tuesday (28).
Russia’s communications regulator Roskomnadzor opened administrative proceedings in late May against Twitch, Pinterest, Airbnb, UPS and two other foreign companies accused of violating personal data legislation.
The Moscow court’s press service said Twitch was found guilty by the Tagansky District Court and fined 2 million rubles ($37,700).
Pinterest and Airbnb were also fined 2 million rubles, news outlets reported, and UPS was fined 1 million rubles.
Twitch, Pinterest, Airbnb and UPS did not immediately respond to requests for comments.
For the first infractions, companies can be fined from 1 to 6 million rubles, said Roskomnadzor, which also filed lawsuits against Apple and Likeme.
Russia fined Alphabet’s Google 15 million rubles earlier this month for what it said was a repeated breach of the country’s data storage laws, after imposing a 3 million ruble fine last year.
Separately, the court said it fined Canadian platform Wattpad 1 million rubles for failing to delete content that Russia deems illegal.
Wattpad did not immediately comment.
