Russia fines Google BRL 1.8 billion for not removing content deemed illegal

A court in Russia fined Alphabet’s Google 21.1 billion rubles on Monday for repeated failure to remove content deemed illegal by the local government, the communications regulator said. Russian Roskomnadzor.

Russia opposes the distribution of content from foreign technology platforms that violate its restrictions. And what was a simmering dispute has erupted into a legal battle since Moscow gathered its armed forces before sending them to Ukraine in February.

Google, which can appeal the decision, did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment.

At the end of last year, Google was fined 7.2 billion rubles for failing to remove or block content.

Another recent move was the confiscation of the bank account of Google’s Russian unit, prompting the subsidiary to file for bankruptcy protection and making it impossible to pay employees and suppliers.

Roskomnadzor said in June that YouTube, also owned by Alphabet, was deliberately spreading false information about the conflict in Ukraine and had allowed content promoting extremist views and calls for children to participate in unauthorized protests.

“The video hosting site YouTube deliberately promotes the dissemination of misleading information about the progress of the special military operation in Ukraine, discrediting the armed forces of the Russian Federation,” Roskomnadzor said.
