Russia for AUKUS: Challenge to international non-proliferation regime

THE Russia expressed its concern today that AUKUS defense pactwill allow Australia to join the group of privileged countries they have nuclear submarines.

The tripartite (Australia – Britain – US) pact, under which Australia will supply nuclear submarine technology from the United States, has angered France and trouble her China since it was announced by Washington, London and Canberra last month.

Moscow, for its part, had said earlier this week that it was seeking more information regarding this agreement.

Today, Friday, the Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov stated that it considers it as a challenge for the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons worldwide, transmits the ΑΠΕ ΜΠΕ.

Speaking at the Center for Political Security in Geneva, he said, among other things:

“We are particularly concerned about the statements made earlier this year in London about the prospect of expanding its nuclear arsenal. We are also concerned by the recent announcement by the United States, Britain and Australia of their intention to develop enhanced cooperation, which will allow Australia, after 18 months of consultation and several years of efforts, to acquire a sufficient number of nuclear submarines to to enter in the top five countries that have such equipment “.

“This is a major challenge for the international non-proliferation regime,” Ryabkov added.

It is noted that the five countries that have nuclear submarines are United States, the Russia, the Britain, the France and the China.
