Russian forces around Ukraine’s capital Kiev are now in defensive positions and have halted “any interest in terms of ground movements” towards the capital, according to a senior US Defense official. However, air and long-range attacks still continue, the source said.
The United States estimates that Ukrainian forces still hold out where they managed to push the Russians east of the city. According to the Defense official, there are still indications that Ukrainian forces are pushing back the Russians around the northern city of Chernihiv.
In Makariv, its neighboring town, it may be under Ukrainian control, the official said, but the information could be disputed.
Until this Friday (25), 1,250 missiles had been launched by Russia against Ukraine since the beginning of the invasion, according to the official heard by the CNN.
Earlier on Friday, the UK Ministry of Defense’s intelligence sector also reported that Ukrainian forces had retaken cities and defensive positions around the eastern part of Kiev.
“Ukrainian counterattacks and Russian forces retreating into overstretched supply lines allowed Ukraine to reoccupy cities and defensive positions up to 35 kilometers east of Kiev,” the ministry said.
“Ukrainian forces will likely continue to try to push Russian forces back along Kiev’s northwest axis towards Hostomel airfield,” it said.
