Russian security services (FSB) announced today that they had arrested three Ukrainian spies, one of whom was preparing an “attack” with explosives, as tensions between the two countries escalated.
The FSB did not specify in which areas or when the Ukrainians who were allegedly spies were arrested.
According to a statement from the Russian security services, two of these individuals “arrived in Russia to gather information and capture with photos and videos strategic facilities and transport infrastructure.”
“A handgun and an automatic weapon, as well as personal protective equipment, were found in the vehicle they were using,” the security services said.
According to the FSB, the two men “confessed that they had been recruited” by the Ukrainian security forces (SBU), in exchange for $ 10,000.
The third suspect “was arrested on the spot with means of destruction while going to the crime scene”. According to the FSB, the latter was arrested with two improvised explosive devices with a power equivalent to 1.5 kg of TNT.
The FSB also announced the sentencing in another case of an officer allegedly belonging to the Ukrainian army intelligence services to six and a half years in prison by a Russian court.
The alleged agent, who was arrested in July, was found guilty of “coordinating the preparation and surveillance of a sabotage team sent to Russia from Ukraine.”
Russia regularly announces the arrest of people it portrays as spies or “saboteurs” working for Ukraine, mainly in the Crimea, which it annexed in 2014.
The arrests announced today came amid rising tensions between the two countries, with Kiev voicing fears of an impending invasion and Moscow accused of mobilizing troops at the border.
