Russia has begun withdrawing its diplomatic staff from all diplomatic missions in Ukraine, the Russian news agency TASS reported from Kiev, citing the Russian embassy in the Ukrainian capital.
A spokesman for the Russian embassy, commenting on reports in the Ukrainian media that Russian diplomats had been seen burning documents, said that this was indeed the case. “It is a planned process. In these cases, as now, there is a package of measures that must be taken, and for security reasons,” said a spokesman for the embassy.
Russia in Ukraine is represented by its embassy in Kiev as well as by consulates general in Kharkov, Odessa and Lvov.
Yesterday, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced that Russia would soon remove the staff of its delegations in Ukraine to protect the lives and safety of its members.
The United States and its allies are trying to intensify pressure on Russia by imposing sanctions on the deployment of troops in the breakaway regions of eastern Ukraine in one of the worst crises in Europe in decades.
