Russia has imposed new fines on Facebook and Twitter

Fine on giant American social media Facebook and Twitter imposed by a Russian court, according to today’s announcement of the authorities, with the two platforms being accused of not removing content which Moscow considers illegal.

According to Reuters, this decision is made in the context of a wider repression on the internet and in the big tech companies from Russia.

Moscow demands that foreign companies operating on the Internet open up in full offices in Russia and keep them privacy of Russian users in its territory, adds the international agency.

Today, moreover, the government announced its plans to impose new taxes to foreign digital service companies as part of a policy aimed at supporting domestic companies in this field.

Moscow’s Tagansky court has announced that it has fined Facebook a total of 21 million rubles (244,414 euros), while two fines totaling 5 million rubles were imposed on Twitter (58,194 euros). Also in the popular Telegram messaging app, the court announced that it had imposed a fine of 9 million rubles (104,749 euros).

Facebook, Twitter and Telegram did not immediately respond to a request from Reuters comment the decision.

It is also worth mentioning that Twitter has had one since March punitive deceleration on his platform. The state telecommunications regulator (Roskomnadzor) has announced that Twitter and other social media have not deleted banned content fast enough.
