Russia has the second highest number of coronavirus deaths in the world, after the United States

THE Russia surpassed the Brazil and now has the second highest number deaths in the world since its pandemic coronavirus, behind only the United States, according to Reuters calculations based on data from the state statistical service Rosstat.

According to Rosstat, as broadcast by APE-MPE, 87,527 people died in November from causes related to the new coronavirus. November was the month with the highest number of casualties in Russia since the beginning of the pandemic.

Deaths from the pandemic in Russia have reached 658,634, according to Reuters calculations based on Rosstat data until the end of November and data from the pandemic response team for December. It thus surpassed Brazil, which has recorded 618,000 deaths.

825,663 people have died in the United States, according to the agency, but the population of the country is twice that of Russia.

Reuters estimates also show that Russia records more than 835,000 excessive deaths since pandemic began in April 2020, by the end of November, compared to the average mortality in 2015-19.

Some epidemiologists say that estimating excessive deaths is the best way to assess the true impact of a pandemic.

So far the number of deaths in Russia has not been affected by the Omicron variant. Today, Russian authorities called on hospitals to prepare for a possible new wave of Covid-19 cases.
