Russia hits Ukrainian warehouses that housed US weapons

Russian forces attacked two Ukrainian army hangars that stored US-made M777 howitzers, a type of artillery weapon, near Kostyantynivka in the Donetsk region, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Sunday.

The Ministry said US-made M777 howitzers were used to bomb residential areas of Donetsk.

Reuters could not independently verify the figures.

Ukrainian military spokesmen were not immediately available for comment.

Ukrainian forces mounted strong resistance and the West imposed sweeping sanctions on Russia in an effort to force it to withdraw.

Russia denies deliberately attacking civilians.

Luhansk and Donetsk provinces comprise Donbass, the industrial region of eastern Ukraine that has become Europe’s biggest battleground for generations. Russia wants to take control of Donbass on behalf of the separatists it supports.

Moscow says driving the Ukrainian military out of the region is key to what it calls a “special military operation” to ensure its own security, an offensive that has lasted more than four months and that the West calls an unprovoked war.
