Hundreds of people took part in a demonstration in central Moscow today Russia, to express their anger at last week’s parliamentary elections, holding placards with slogans such as “bring back the elections”.
The rally was organized by opposition politicians, most of them from the Communist Party, who said the ruling party’s victory was the result of electoral fraud through the online voting system. “I came here today to say that we were once again deceived,” said one woman who took part in the protest. Russian police arrested opposition activists yesterday and warned they would disperse any illegal protesters this weekend.
At present, the authorities have not made any arrests or detentions. About 400 people, including journalists, took part in the protest, Interfax news agency reported, citing Moscow police.
A Reuters reporter put the number of people at the rally at around 1,500.
The final results of the election were announced yesterday and according to them the ruling party United Russia, which supports President Vladimir Putin, secured 324 of the 450 seats in the Russian lower house.
