Russia increased reliance on nuclear weapons after losses in Ukraine: US

As Russia deals with “extensive damage” from its war in Ukraine, Moscow will increasingly rely on its nuclear, cyber and space capabilities, US intelligence agencies said in their annual unclassified threat assessment report.

Intelligence officials testified before the Senate Intelligence Committee on Wednesday.

Heavy battlefield losses in Ukraine “degraded Moscow’s conventional land and air capabilities and increased its reliance on nuclear weapons,” the Office of the Director of National Intelligence said in the report.

“While its war-related cyber activity has not reached the pace or impact we had hoped, Russia will continue to be a major cyber threat as it enhances and employs its espionage, influence and attack capabilities,” the document cites.
