Russia intends to consolidate positions by concentrating troops in Donbass, says professor

ESPM International Relations professor Leonardo Trevisan declared, this Friday (8), in an interview with CNNthat Russia intends to consolidate positions by concentrating its troops in the Luhansk and Donetsk regions of the Donbass.

“Russia is leaving the entire northern and northeastern region of Ukraine, the region where it is closest to Kiev, precisely so as not to multiply efforts. And she is concentrating and bringing all her troops to this region of Kiev, as shown on the map, [para] closer to the border, where it is concentrated in Luhansk and Donetsk, the Donbass area”, says Trevisan.

At least 50 people were killed and 100 injured in an attack on an eastern Ukrainian railway station in the city of Kramatorsk on Friday as civilians tried to flee to safer parts of the country, a local police statement said.

While local officials blame the Russian army for the attack, separatists from the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) blame Ukrainian forces for the attack on civilians, citing the Tochka-U rocket wreckage at the scene as evidence. “This obsolete Soviet missile system is not in service with the DPR, LPR and the Russian Federation, being actively used by the Ukrainian military.”

According to Trevisan, “Russia is trying to consolidate positions. An attack from Kramatorsk is happening at a time when Russia was already asking Donetsk civilians to leave the city.”

“So it’s very likely that we have a war between the Ukrainian version and the Russian version about this attack. Russia was asking you to leave for a very concrete reason. Russia dominates 60% of Donetsk. It wants to completely dominate Donetsk and that’s why brought from the north to close that entire corridor that comes from Kharkiv to Odessa”, he continues, explaining that this would be done to cut the country in two, as in the ceasefire negotiations with a fait accompli.

Russian President Vladimir Putin recognized on February 21, three days before the start of the war, the independence of the breakaway areas of Donetsk and Luhansk.
