The Central Scientific Research Institute of Mechanical Engineering (TsNIIMash), which is part of the Roscosmos structure, together with the Energia Rocket and Space Corporation have begun to create the first Russian humanoid robot designed for spacewalk. The project, called Teledroid, is part of a targeted work program on the International Space Station. The direct executor of the project will be the NPO Androidnaya Tekhnika.
The Android Technics Research and Production Enterprise is known for creating the Fedora robot (in the title photo), which visited the ISS in 2019. Its executive director Yevgeny Dudorov then announced the possibility of the appearance of an heir to the “Fedor”, intended for work in outer space.
Unlike Fedor, Teledroid will have no legs, but it will receive a torso like a human. The robot will be able to move between the station modules thanks to a special manipulator. The operator will control it in avatar mode using a suit, while on the ISS or in the Mission Control Center, although the robot will be able to perform certain tasks on its own. The development of “Teledroid” should be completed by 2025, then it will be placed in a scientific and energy module.
The state corporation Roscosmos noted that the main task of the Teledroid project is aimed at developing technologies for space robotics, including using artificial intelligence. They believe that this is necessary for the further exploration of space and planets.
