Women in Ukraine are afraid of childbirth after at least 80 attacks on obstetric units since the start of Russia’s invasion, according to the Guardian, leading to lower fertility and greatest mortality in the world. Pictures showed a pregnant woman on a stretcher, with her face pale from the shock, the legs dipped in the blood and the hand holding her belly. Behind her, the bombed ruins of the Mariupol Maternity Hospital. More than twelve people, including women in childbirth, were injured in the attack in March 2022. The woman who was photographed, Irina Kalinina, later died with her unborn child. For the past three years, obstetric care in Ukraine has remained under constant attack, with more than 2,000 attacks on medical facilities, of which 81 influenced maternal care and obstetric rooms.
