Russia is investigating reports of a British SAS presence in western Ukraine

LAST UPDATE: 19:20

Russia’s top state intelligence agency said on Saturday it was examining a Russian media report that members of Britain’s SAS special forces, specializing in sabotage, had been deployed in western Ukraine, Reuters reported.

SAS is a select military force trained to conduct special operations, monitor and combat terrorism. Russia’s RIA Novosti news agency quoted a Russian security source as saying on Saturday that about 20 SAS members had been sent to the Lviv region.

In a statement, the Russian Investigative Committee said it would follow up on reports that they had been sent “to assist Ukrainian special services in organizing sabotage on Ukrainian territory.”

It is recalled that Britain said it had sent military trainers to Ukraine earlier this year to train local forces in the use of anti-tank weapons, but the British government said on 17 February – a week before the Russian invasion – that it had withdrawn all troops except those needed to protect her ambassador.

It was not clear what action the Russian investigative commission intended to take in response to a possible SAS involvement in Ukraine. But the fact of the investigation into the possible presence of forces from a NATO country is important, as Russia has warned the West not to obstruct the “special military operation” it is conducting in Ukraine.

A spokesman for the British Ministry of Defense said: “We do not comment on the activities of the special forces.”
