Russia will take a more direct approach in its effort to capture Ukrainian cities after plans to encircle targets such as Kiev were thwarted, a NATO military official said.
“We are seeing a change in strategy on the Russian side… They are less focused on surrounding cities, more focused on trying to get in,” the official told CNN.
“The bombing [mais pesado] it’s a side effect of that change,” the official said.
Russia’s slow advance and heavy losses suffered in the early days of its invasion forced the change, the official said, with Russian forces now paralyzed by logistical issues as they try to advance into Ukraine.
“It’s the entire logistics chain that is somehow not working [corretamente],” said the NATO official. “So what we’ve seen is really bad strategy, combined with poor preparation and dwindling morale.”
“They have no food, no fuel and no spare parts,” he added.

While strong Ukrainian resistance is largely responsible for holding back the Russian advance, the NATO official warned that the situation on the ground could change quickly and that “expectations” must be “managed”.
Ukrainians will tire while Russia still has new reserves, the official warned. “Russia can scale even higher,” they said.
The official added that there is still a chance that the Belarusian military will join the offensive.
