Russia is preparing to transfer students of radio electronics to domestic processors in 2022

The Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Ministry of Education and Science intend next year to replace foreign computers with Russian counterparts based on Elbrus and Baikal at universities and institutes that train students in radio electronics. They plan to start updating the fleet of equipment with the Association of Universities on the electronic component base (it includes 32 educational institutions), but they want to expand the import substitution program in the future. This was reported by Kommersant.

At the moment, it is not known how much these innovations will cost the government. The general director of “Baikal Electronics” Andrey Evdokimov said that on average a computer based on the “Baikal” processor costs 60,000 rubles – if you have to re-equip 1,500 jobs, then about 100 million rubles will need to be allocated for this. However, he also stressed that it would not be possible to do with just updating the system units – it would also be necessary to transfer the server infrastructure and supercomputer clusters to domestic platforms. This can significantly increase the cost of import substitution.

This idea of the government is criticized by experts interviewed by Kommersant. Alexei Parfentiev, head of the analytics department at SerchInform, is sure that Russian processors are still lagging behind foreign ones in performance – because of this, more equipment will be needed to perform comparable tasks. He also stressed that universities will have to re-buy programs, and warned that graduates entering the real labor market need to know a variety of infrastructure and programs.

The top manager of a “large IT company” who remained anonymous believes that the problem of this import substitution is not in the Russian processors themselves, but in another – there is no software ecosystem around the Elbrus and Baikals, especially the engineering one.
