Russia is adjusting its protocols for the use of nuclear weapons in light of growing Western support for Ukraine, Russian state news agency TASS reported on Sunday, citing Russian government minister Sergei Ryabkov.
Ryabkov, the country’s deputy foreign minister, told TASS that Russia is in the “advanced stages” of work to revise a key document that outlines the “parameters and conditions” for the use of its nuclear arsenal.
According to the current document, as of 2020, Russia has the green light to use nuclear weapons if an enemy “uses such weapons or other weapons of mass destruction” against Russia or if an enemy attack is launched that “threatens the very existence of the state.”
Ryabkov explained that the decision was made after analyzing “recent conflicts” and “Western actions” regarding the war in Ukraine.
Ukraine wants to attack targets in Russia
Ukraine has been pushing hard in recent weeks for the United States and its allies to authorize the use of long-range weapons to strike targets inside Russia.
Russia currently possesses the world’s largest arsenal of nuclear warheads. The country is also one of the five initial signatories to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, which aims to prevent the spread and use of nuclear weapons worldwide.
In June, Russian President Vladimir Putin warned Western powers not to take the Kremlin’s nuclear capabilities “flippantly.”
In a meeting with editors-in-chief of international news agencies, Putin said the West would be wrong to assume that Russia would not use its nuclear weapons.
“If someone’s actions threaten our sovereignty and territorial integrity, we reserve the right to use all available means in response,” Putin warned.
