Speaking to the Ria Novosti news agency, Alexei Paramanov, the Russian Foreign Ministry’s European Affairs Officer, attacked the Draghi government’s defense minister.
“Italian Defense Minister Lorenzo Guerini sent us a request for assistance in dealing with the coronavirus and is now one of the biggest hawks inspiring the Italian government’s anti-Russian campaign,” Paramanov said.
At the same time, he stressed that “in the context of an anti-Russian hysteria, the Italian authorities suddenly seem to have forgotten everything: the treaties, the bilateral agreements, the special relations between the two countries, the centuries-old traditions and the experience of Italian-Russian cooperation.”
The Italian Foreign Ministry responded by stressing that “these are threatening statements, which it resolutely rejects” and again called for “an immediate end to the barbaric and illegal attack on Ukraine”, which the Italian government “unequivocally condemns”.
