Russia has completed testing of its new S-500 surface-to-air missile system and has begun supplying it to the armed forces, Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Borisov said today, according to RIA Novosti.
The S-500, a weapon that Moscow hopes will strengthen its defenses and become an export bestseller, has been described as a space defense system and can intercept intercontinental ballistic missiles, supersonic cruise missiles and aircraft.
Russia began testing the system last year, and its armed forces have announced that the first of these systems will be deployed around the city of Moscow.
According to Reuters, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan had stated in 2019 that Ankara would also jointly produce the S-500 missile system with Moscow.
