Russia on Sunday (19) launched its third ballistic missile against Kiev this month, with preliminary data showing that all air weapons were destroyed during the approach to the city, the military administration of the Ukrainian capital said.
“This is already the third ballistic attack in the capital in August, with intervals of exactly six days between each attack,” Serhiy Popko, head of Kiev’s military administration, said on the Telegram messaging app.
“According to preliminary information, the Russians, for the third time in a row, have probably used North Korean ballistic missiles.”
Reuters was unable to independently verify the type of missiles launched.
Separately, Ukraine’s air force chief said Ukrainian forces destroyed eight Russian attack drones and five of eight missiles launched overnight.
“As a result of anti-aircraft combat, anti-aircraft missile troops of the Air Force, mobile firing groups of the Ukrainian Defense Forces and electronic warfare units shot down 13 air targets in the Kiev, Sumy and Poltava regions,” Mykola Oleshchuk said.
He said all the missiles failed to hit their intended targets and there were no reports of casualties or injuries.
Oleshchuk said Russia launched a total of three ballistic missiles, three cruise missiles and two guided missiles from aircraft.
Kiev authorities also said there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage in the capital.
However, Kiev region governor Ruslan Kravchenko said in a statement that two residential houses were destroyed and 16 others were damaged by falling debris.
Reuters was unable to independently verify the scale of the damage. A Reuters witness heard explosions that sounded like air defense systems early on Sunday.
