Russia: Man Arrested in Crimea Accused of Spying for Ukraine

The arrest of a man, on the charge of treason, was made today (22/04) by the Federal Security Service of Russia. The person in question allegedly provided confidential information to Ukraine for the Russian Black Sea Fleet, as reported by the RIA news agency.

The arrest comes at a time of high tensions with Ukraine, as Moscow has strengthened its military forces near their common borders. Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu arrived in Crimea today to oversee large-scale military exercises.

The military exercises will be attended by at least 10,000 soldiers and more than 40 warships, the Ministry of Defense announced, according to the Interfax news agency and as reported by APE-MPE.

Russia annexed the Crimean peninsula from Ukraine in 2014, prompting the West to impose sanctions. Kiev wants the region back to its sovereignty.

The man, whose name was not disclosed, arrested in Sevastopol for allegedly gathering and passing secret information to Ukrainian military intelligence services about the Russian fleet based in the Black Sea, the security services reported.

Many cases of betrayal have been reported in Russia in recent years. Critics of the government have challenged the allegations in some of those cases, saying the allegations could not be substantiated because details of the cases were not disclosed.

Last month a woman was sentenced to 12 years in prison for espionage in favor of Ukraine in a closed trial.

Lyudmila Denisova, the human rights ombudsman in the Ukrainian Parliament, said the case against the woman was fabricated.
