Russia may ban mining in residential buildings

The Energy Commission of the State Council sent a recommendation to the Russian government to completely ban the mining of cryptocurrencies in residential buildings. Officials believe that this will help prevent fires.

Earlier, a draft law on the legalization of mining was sent to the government for consideration. As Anatoly Aksakov, Chairman of the State Duma Committee on the Financial Market, recently said, it is proposed to make taxes for miners the same as for representatives of the rest of the business. But so far there have been no comments on the bill from the government, so it is not known when the law will be approved.

“The Ministry of Energy has consistently advocated for the legislative regulation of mining. As for residential buildings, according to energy companies, such activities may lead to shutdowns due to overloading of electrical networks not designed for such an industrial load,” the Ministry of Energy said.

According to Anton Tkachev, a member of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, Information Technologies and Communications, if the recommendations are approved by the government, then separate bills will most likely be developed to implement them. Also, according to him, mining can be completely banned in regions with a shortage of electricity.

“The decision to ban mining in residential areas and energy-deficient regions is a completely logical consequence. The issue of energy security, especially for small towns, where there are not always enough budgets for the restoration and proper repair of energy systems and energy facilities, is quite acute,” the deputy emphasized.

It should be noted that in the first half of 2022 alone, 23 fires were recorded in residential buildings and garages in the Irkutsk region, where mining equipment was installed.

At the end of last year, it was reported that the Ministry of Energy of the Russian Federation is considering the possibility of increasing energy generation in regions with a large number of miners.
