Russia musters more than 100,000 troops to break Kiev defenses: Ukrainian official

More than 100,000 Russian troops have gathered in the Kupyansk area to try to break Kiev’s defenses, a Ukrainian military spokesman said on Monday.

“The enemy concentrated a very powerful grouping in the Lyman-Kupyansk direction, with more than 100,000 men, more than 900 tanks and more than 370 MLRS [veículo blindado e autopropulsado de lançamento de foguetes],” said Serhii Cherevatyi, deputy commander of strategic communications at the Eastern Military Group.

“The enemy has deployed airborne units, the best motorized infantry units there. As additional support, there is the combat army reserve, territorial troops, Storm-Z companies.”

He added that Russian forces are “putting everything to break through our defense. Our soldiers stand firm on the defense.”

Cherevatyi said the Russian advance into the area was to try to gain some success after Ukraine seized momentum around Bakhmut.

“[Os russos] need to show at least some success, so they’ve tried their hardest in that area, doing everything they can and can’t, to show offensive action,” he said.

Cherevatyi said Russian forces remained in the rear in the eastern city, adding that their casualties were mounting.

“The enemy’s losses are already approaching those that were at the height of the fight with the Wagner Group,” he said. “The Russians are continually renewing their combat staff, sending paratroopers there in the first place, hoping to stop our offensive.”

“We are being very cautious and deliberate to preserve our forces and people as much as possible.”
